The following scam scenario has been brought to our attention this holiday season by card terminal manufacturer Dejavoo and we feel it is important to bring awareness to you.
The con is a consumer makes a large purchase at a merchant location and uses a credit card. Once the card is declined they advise the merchant they need to call their bank, they (someone on their team) make an erroneous call and say its the bank, this “fake bank employee” on the other end of the phone asks to speak to the merchant and then attempts to walk the merchant through the steps to put their payment terminal in offline mode/store and forward mode and run the credit card through again. In offline mode, the card never communicates to the issuer and therefore never comes back with the decline.
We strongly urge that you please inform your personnel about this scam and advise them if a customer is disputing a decline that you contact us directly, not the bank.
A merchant should never accept direction based on a call they didn’t place themselves from their own phone. If you wish to remove Store and Forward from the features of your terminal you can flag it off in the Dejavoo file build or you can call the Dejavoo 24/7 help desk at (877) 358-6797 option #2 and they can walk you through the steps to remove the Store and Forward feature from your merchants terminal.
